A look at Fifth Grade Curriculum:
Reading
- The focus is on novels. Fifth graders will study the following genres in depth: Tall Tales, Historical Fiction, Fantasy, Mystery, and Science Fiction. Students will study reading strategies such as visualizing, asking questions, making connections, inferring, determining most important details, repairing comprehension, and synthesizing.
Spelling
-Students will use word that coincide with our reading series. The spelling words will be focused around spelling patterns. All Spelling words are available on Spellingcity.com.
English
- Students will study the parts of speech, letter writing, essay writing, research reports, journal writing, persuasive writing, and personal narratives.
Social Studies
- Students will study United States history from early exploration through the Revolutionary War. This will include the United States Government as it is presently.
Math
- Area covered will include: adding subtracting, multiplying, and dividing whole numbers, decimals, and fractions; ratios and percents; metric and customary measurement; perimeter, area, volume, circumference, and surface area; data and graphing; and geometry.
Science
- The science units from the Battle Creek Science program include: objects in the sky (phases of the moon, eclipses, ocean tides, causes of the seasons, planet characteristics), forces and motion (contact and noncontact forces, balanced and unbalanced forces, and Newton’s Laws), and systems and survival (characteristics of plants/animals that help them survive, live tree frogs and hermit crabs are raised, animal body systems are studied, dissection of heart/lungs).
